Squirrel Brand Housing
Date of Service: Completed 2003
Project Type: Multi-family Residentual & Historical
Construction Cost: $5 Million
Just-A-Start Corporation purchased and developed the Squirrel Brand Candy Factory into affordable housing. The factory, famous for turning our nut candies, such as the Squirrel Nut Zipper, was dilapidated and structurally unsound. Mr. Prüfer, while a Senior Associate at Stull and Lee, Inc. was the principal in charge of the project through all phases of design and throughout construction. The project created 19 units consisting of studio, one–, and two–bedroom units. The work consisted of seismic retrofit of the super-structure, removing the building’s parapet, excavation of the building’s basement to accommodate mechanical and electrical spaces as well as some housing units, and adding handicapped accessibility to the building with new basement entry and building elevator. The project won an award from the Massachusetts Historical Commission for Adaptive Reuse. Preservation was a key ingredient to the design, with the use of historically accurate windows that utilize the entire original window opening, the preservation of the building’s original signage, and the preservation and recreation of a resident garden space adjacent to the building. The garden was originally created by the candy factory workers.
